Painting Palestine: Teaching Children Through Art and History

During our team’s stopover in Istanbul, we had the opportunity to participate in a Palestine Painting Workshop at the Taksim Mosque Bookstore. The workshop was organised to introduce children to the land of Palestine through art, creating a meaningful space where creativity meets history and cultural awareness.

Through this activity, the children were introduced to the history and significance of Palestine, particularly Masjid Al-Aqsa, one of the most sacred sites in Islam. Beyond learning about its religious importance, they were also exposed to the struggles faced by Palestinians living under occupation, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the realities experienced by the Palestinian people.

Art serves as a powerful medium for children to express their thoughts, explore their creativity, and communicate ideas beyond words. Through painting, they are encouraged to use their imagination while developing an appreciation for the places, people, and stories they learn about. Each brushstroke becomes an opportunity to engage with a history that extends beyond the classroom.

At the same time, learning history provides children with meaningful knowledge that helps shape their understanding of the world. By introducing Palestine and Masjid Al-Aqsa through an engaging and creative approach, the workshop demonstrates how historical education can be made accessible and memorable for younger generations.

The combination of art and history offers more than just a creative experience. It provides an opportunity to nurture curiosity, cultivate awareness, and encourage children to understand the significance of places and communities beyond their immediate surroundings.

Our participation in this workshop during our stopover in Istanbul was a reminder that raising awareness about Palestine can take many forms. Through simple yet meaningful initiatives, children can begin to learn about Palestine, appreciate its historical and religious significance, and develop a greater understanding of the struggles faced by its people.

Through art, children learn to create. Through history, they learn to understand. Together, these experiences can help shape a generation that is more knowledgeable, empathetic, and conscious of the world around them.
