Syrians’ Children And Newborns In A War-Occupied Country: Personality Development In A Deprived Sour

Children and personality

Childhood. Most of us had very fond memories of them. We play tag with friends, hide-and-seek with siblings, play house and many more. These forms of memories are what would eventually shape us into a full-fledged person in future times. Yet, not all are given these kind of opportunities and chances in their childhood times. In a war-occupied country, these luxurious activities are not even a part of the playing chips on the table.
Syrian Children

Living in the terrors of mass-shooting and sudden bombings in every nooks and crannies of their neighborhood, the idea of sitting down idly with friends and families do not even popped out in their head. Exercising cautions most of the time had made them hostile and restless throughout the years. Thus, does these made them less inhuman? To not be able to develop themselves like the rest of the world? The writing here existed solely on to explore the importance of childhood upbringing in personality development.

Sadness, but this kid is so strong…

Syrian orphans

Schultz and Schultz (2017) quoted from Erikson stated that the early stages of life are to develop the sense of hope, will, and the purpose of the child. Erikson also stated that the first year of our life is our greatest time of helplessness. Thus, parents, teachers, and even to some environment hold the key to help us to grow and nurture these basic strengths to life. The absence of these person as due to war and attrition inhibit the orphans of Syria and create a situation where the normal upbringing would be proven difficult. For instances, infants are totally dependent on their mother for survival, security and affection. The interactions of infants with their mother would determine the development of trust in them.

The consistency, continuity of the mother’s affection provide the basis for the infant to fold their own personality later in life. This interaction not only exists biologically, but also socially. The absence of motherly figure in the infant’s life before or during the development of trust may led to the overtake of the feelings of uncertainty and wariness of others, leading to disbelief and mistrust towards the outside worlds. This proves that thousands of Syrian orphans lack the conviction to trust others and live in hostility most of their life, due to the unjustified war and suppression unto them.

Social Responsibility

In Islamic perspective, Adibah Sulaiman, Ezad Azraai Jamsari, Noor Safuan Che Noh (2014) opinionated that the upbringing of children and infants requires rigorous effort from the parents, teachers and excellent environment. This is in line with what had been stated by Erikson, and also agreed by Al-Ghazali that all of this person as must come together to develop an Insan with righteous heart and noble personality. Therefore, giving education and developing the children’s basic strength of hope, will, and purpose since a tender age is a crucial duty and responsibility to be carried out by all.
In a deprived state due to war and attrition, those who are capable to help and giving out hands should do so to ensure the development of the children in those affected countries. The role of the absences should be shouldered by those who can. We, as the brothers and sisters in Islam should join hands and provide help and take part in ensuring the development of Syrian orphans, children and infants to become a full-fledged person, imbued with righteous heart and noble personality in accordance to Al-Quran and As-Sunnah.
